What Is Monel Tube?

Monel Tube is a ductile nickel-copper alloy known for its exceptional corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Composed primarily of nickel (at least 63%) and copper, with small amounts of iron, manganese, and other elements, Monel Tube is used in a wide variety of industries for its ability to withstand harsh and corrosive environments.

Monel Tube has excellent resistance to corrosion in both acidic and alkaline environments, making it highly durable in marine, chemical processing, and oil and gas applications. Its mechanical strength and toughness ensure its suitability for high-pressure environments, while its ductility and malleability allow for easy fabrication into a wide variety of tube shapes and sizes. Monel Tube retains its mechanical properties at elevated temperatures and has excellent thermal and electrical conductivity.

To overcome the alloy’s work-hardening tendency, slow speeds and high feeds should be used during machining. A chip breaker is recommended to handle sticky chips. Monel Tube can be welded by either resistance or shielded melt methods, and post-weld annealing is recommended for maximum resistance to intergranular attack. For hot working, uniform heating to 2100°F allows for successful forging, upsetting, and roughing. Cold working increases hardness but retains ductility, and post-fabrication annealing is necessary to maintain maximum corrosion resistance and non-magnetic condition.
