The development of Duplex stainless steel began in the 1920s, aiming to provide better comprehensive properties than austenitic and ferritic stainless steels, and 1.4462 is a representative grade.

During forging, it is sensitive to thermal shock and requires slow heating to 1200°C, followed by forging at temperatures between 1200°C and 900°C, with rapid cooling in air or water. Welding 1.4462 is challenging due to its dual-phase structure, necessitating high energy densities and careful control to maintain the desired phase balance and mechanical properties.

In terms of machining, its high strength and work hardening nature demand the use of cermet or coated tungsten carbide tools for effective processing. Cold working is feasible under appropriate conditions, as specified in DIN EN 10263-5.

Despite its numerous advantages, there are limitations to consider. 1.4462 duplex stainless steel can be susceptible to embrittlement at high temperatures, particularly in the range of 600°C to 900°C, which necessitates rapid cooling after hot working.
