What Is 321 Stainless Steel Material?

Alloy 321 (UNS S32100) is an austenitic stainless steel with titanium stabilization, known for its favorable resistance to general corrosion. It exhibits exceptional resistance to intergranular corrosion, particularly when exposed to temperatures within the range of 800 – 1500°F (427 – 816°C), where chromium carbide precipitation occurs. Withstanding oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C), this alloy surpasses alloys 304 and 304L in terms of creep and stress rupture properties. Additionally, it possesses commendable toughness at low temperatures.

To address the need for increased creep resistance and higher strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C), Alloy 321H (UNS S32109) was developed as a variant with a higher carbon content (0.04 – 0.10). The carbon content in the plate often facilitates dual certification.

Heat treatment has no effect on hardening material AISI 321; cold working is the primary method employed for increasing its hardness. Its weldability is excellent, and it can be readily processed using standard fabrication practices.

However, it is important to note that type 321 stainless steel is not recommended as a welding consumable due to the poor transfer of titanium across high-temperature arcs. In such cases, grade 347 is preferred as the niobium element performs the same task of carbide stabilization while being transferable across a welding arc. Grade 347 is commonly employed as a consumable for welding 321 metal. It is worth mentioning that Grade 347 is only sporadically used as a parent plate material.
